Master of Public Policy student Kaustubh Bhakay on why he swapped India for Sydney and how the Social Justice internship program enabled him to work with international experts in policymaking on climate action initiatives. Why did you choose to study Public Policy at the University of Sydney? I have always been fascinated with all aspects of policy development, from research to implementation. Back in India, I worked for a conservation NGO on government and privately funded projects. Working with a wide variety of stakeholders helped me realise that I needed to learn more about the public policy making process. Studying abroad felt like the perfect opportunity to pursue my passion and the Master of Public Policy program at the University of Sydney ranks among the top programs in the world.  The degree is internationally renowned and offers a great mix of academic and practical learning that is rarely seen at other universities. Why Finding a Student Job in Scandinavia is Easier Than You Think

Image
Getting a job can be one of those maturity tests that can leave you in a puddle of your own tears, like when you first do laundry and have to select a programme on the washing machine, or make your own doctor’s appointment. Seeing how we’re barely grown-ups ourselves, we decided to help fellow students understand what steps they should take when searching for a job in Northern Europe, and what they might have missed while searching for the best place to apply. 1. No worries about the language requirements I think we can safely assume you are searching for a Master’s degree taught in English. Fortunately, the Scandinavian region is one of the parts of Europe where almost everyone speaks English, and to know their local language is just an extra, not a mandatory job requirement. So, if and when you decide to go and get a job, don’t worry about your lack of Swedish, Danish, or Icelandic knowledge, because nobody will care, honestly. How Many Hours Of Work Is Permitted In Australia? Overseas students in Australia are allowed to work up to 40 hours a fortnight during the university semester study periods and full-time during holiday periods. A fortnight is a period of 14 days commencing on any Monday and ending on the second following Sunday. Here is an example of how 40 hours a fortnight is calculated: Suppose a student visa holder works according to the below table over a four week period after his/her course has commenced: Week one – 15 hours Week two – 25 hours Week three – 25 hours Week four – 10 hours If you see in the above example, the total hours worked in week two and week three is more than 40 hours. Newfoundland and Labrador needs more immigrants

Image
Newfoundland and Labrador are looking to attract and retain new immigrants to address its aging and declining population. The province may not typically be an immigrant’s first choice when immigrating to Canada. That is reserved for the more popular provinces such as Ontario and B.C. As a consequence, the province is looking to boost its immigration efforts. Immigration has become a priority among political party campaigns as we approach the provincial election date on February 13. The Liberal Party in the province is promising that they will welcome triple the number of newcomers in the next five years. The Progressive Conservatives also promised to have high immigration targets. Immigrants in the province are arguably the best placed to offer ideas to address the immigration problem. CBC’s  Here & Now,  a television news program based in the province, held an immigration-focused panel.   Adewale has racked up several years of work experience as an agricultural advisor for a Nigerian research organisation and is passionate about working with local farmers to improve agricultural practices in his native Nigeria. He knows, however, that he cannot achieve all his goals without further training to develop the necessary knowledge and skills. “I want to bring the latest developments in agriculture back to my country,” he says, particularly to help less developed farmers and to improve the living conditions of both his family and community. The 30-year-old is aware that Australia is a world leader in agriculture and wants to ensure that sustainability is a priority in his country. While his employer has offered to partially sponsor him to pursue his postgraduate studies in Australia, the financial cost of uprooting his family from Lagos — an oil-rich city enveloped by crime — to Australia, was a pain point.
